You've decided to get better home protection and install a security alarm system. But what type of system should you get$%: Which is better, a hard-wired system or a wireless one$%: Let's take a look at what both types have to offer.

A hard-wired system is best to install during the process of building a house, when the structural frame is still exposed for easy accessibility. You may find it difficult to install a hard-wired system at a finished residence, and you may incur renovation expenses in addition to paying for the system. This is partly because you would want the wires to be hidden, partly to make them hard for intruders to find and cut, partly for aesthetic reasons.

Note that there will be a warning if any wires are actually cut--you will be informed if there is any problem with the system. And if the system is active when one of the wires is cut, the alarm will be triggered automatically. Hard-wired alarm systems are good at self-monitoring--something that is often not available on a wireless system.

A wireless system is easier to install and usually requires no home renovation. If you need to get a security system for a finished home or a temporary residence, or if you are renting and cannot make any permanent changes to the place, then a wireless system has definite advantages. You can also choose it install it by yourself, although you should consult the manual carefully to make sure you are doing it correctly.

But while a wireless system is less trouble to install, it may require more diligence and effort to maintain in working condition. The wireless units run on batteries, and there may be no sign that these have run out except for a warning light and a beep. If you did not see or hear those indications, you will not know that the batteries have run out until you are able to check the unit. Therefore, you should have regular checks of your wireless system, probably at least once a month.

There are some wireless systems that give you the option of using plug-in units instead. Since these run on your household power, you don't need to check them constantly. And the units should come equipped with back-up batteries in case of a power outage. These back-ups can provide up to 12 hours of battery life.

Another advantage of a wireless system is portability. It is as easy to take down as it is to set up. Therefore you can take your security system with you if you move to a different residence.

Whether you get a hard-wired system or a wireless system depends on your personal needs and priorities. In general, a hard-wired alarm system is the preferred method, but a wireless system has features to recommend it as well.
